Mickey Mouse Apparel and Disney Presents

Posted on April 4th, 2010 by admin

it never ceases to amaze me how mickey mouse apparel, DVDs, and cartoons remain so popular. But where did this phenomena, Mickey Mouse actually begin?. In this article I’m going to take a look back at one of his earliest cartoons, Steamboat Willie.

Featuring synchronized sound for the first time, this third Mickey Mouse cartoon was released in 1928. The premiere full Steamboat Willie took place in New York. It was successful almost instantaneously.

Walt Disney along with other Iwerks wrote and directed the movie, they parodied Steamboat Bill Junior’ , a Buster Keaton film. A Disney animator called Wilfred Jackson put the music together. Some of the popular songs were Steamboat Bill And Turkey in the Straw.

There has been much controversy surrounding the copyright of the film, but more recent evidence suggests Steamboat Willie may actually be in the public domain. The film has been voted at number 13 in the list of the 50 greatest cartoons, and has been preserved in the United States film Registry.

The censors scissors have been applied to the film in the past. Mickey failed to impress the censor at all when he used a goose as a set of bagpipes and pulled a cat’s tail.

Walt Disney Treasures DVD also featured Steamboat Willie. The DVD release Vintage Mickey included Steamboat Willie, and was a collection of black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons.

Sooner or later it was obvious that Mickey Mouse was featured in a video game. In the videogame Mickey Mania: the Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse, the basis of the first game was provided by the Steamboat Willie film. The game was released on the Super Nintendo, Sega CD and Sony PlayStation consoles.

In the Steamboat Willie inspired world on the Disney game Kingdom Hearts I I, period versions of the characters are featured.

What amazes me is that this cartoon from all those years ago has spawned this huge market for Mickey Mouse Toys. If you go for a quick online search you will be a mayonnaise at the amount of Mickey Mouse related paraphernalia exists. If you’re looking for DVDs, video games, dressing up sets, and even wallpaper you’ll find it online. You’ll find something for everyone. The obsession with Mickey Mouse appears to be as strong as ever.

I’m really amazed that 80 years after the first film, Mickey Mouse is still as successful as ever. Quite amazing!.
