For those currently shopping for home: When you view a place that has been staged, does it bother you?

Do you feel a little bit llike the seller is "cheating" in a way because it’s not how anyone’s home *really* looks? Usually you can tell a place has been staged because they have something like an antique sewing machine in a small bedroom by itself or a café table in the dining room with wine glasses and napkins folded to stick up as high as they possibly can.
Yeah it usually bugs the crap out of me when I see a staged house… I mean, I like a house to be TIDY, and clean, but not like a magazine cover shoot!
I love it when the house is empty, it gives my imagination more room to play with… but then again, I also like a house that looks lived in, even with kids toys all over or something… makes me feel like we could live there comfortably, because look! someone else is!
I don’t really think the seller is "cheating" per se, but I do agree- not many peoples houses look like the staged ones you see on TV!

So what you are saying is that you went on every date with your boyfriends without showering or putting on makeup and nice clothes? The fact of the matter is that we do everything we can do make the situation look better then it normally is so that people will take an interest. If this truly bothers you then shop for a new home and insist on seeing only spec homes with no furnishings.

Of course not. Any seller is going to make their home look good if they’re smart.
If a house is dirty and the lawn isn’t cut I’m going to lowball the price.

all home that are sold through a realitor are staged by as the realitor will reccomend it. most other homes are staged too some may just show more than others. The less clutter the roomier the place looks. the best thing to do is to try and imagine your furniture in the room

I love it! It lets me imagine the potential the house has and fall in love. Lived in spaces just aren’t that attractive.

No, they arent cheating. Its like every product advertised in America. I am an appraiser and have seen many people who live in model home like conditions.
You know who truly cheats? Food advertising. Tell me one restaurant that served food that looked like it did in the commercial and I’ll be there today.
Staged homes MAINLY help give buyers a reference as to how their furniture fits in homes. Im also a Realtor, and most of my buyers want to know if their furniture will fit on a certain wall, etc, will the bed fit in a bedroom, etc. The secondary effects are that they add color to a neutral looking home, and dress it up a bit.
The drawback and main debate bas been that furniture makes a homes look smaller, empty is bigger, but plain.

It doesn’t bother me either way, I have looked a staged homes and empty homes. It makes it a little easier to think about where your things would go if you have an idea and it just makes the house seem more warm and inviting when its staged. I really don’t think its cheating, just making it look better and it could help it to sell faster, you could be loosing money when the house is on the market for a long time. Why not make it more appealing. Would having a landscaper come in and make the yard beautiful be cheating as well?
